Pokhara, the essential trailhead for treks into the Annapurnas
We have often heard travelers saying “Nepal can be easily mistaken as heaven on earth”! Well, it is not an overstatement when someone says something like that because one is bound to be mesmerized and overwhelmed by the natural beauty of this Himalayan country. Ice-capped mountains, beautifully decorated temples, green forests, lakes and rivers form an integral part of the natural beauty that this country has to offer.
There are many travelers from the western countries who keep visiting and revisiting Nepal just because they like to soak in nature without ever worrying about their hectic lifestyle back home. Though the towns like Kathmandu are major tourist attractions but people who prefer a little more proximity with nature love to travel to the interiors of Nepal.
Next to Kathmandu Pokhara is the second most visited city in Nepal. Located only some four to five hours drive from the capital, Pokhara serves as the essential trailhead for treks into the Annapurnas and beyond.
Pokhara also acts as the starting point for a trek roundabout Dhaulagiri. Above all, however, Pokhara is inherently connected with trekking Annapurna region, whether the circuit trek of the entire massif or the Annapurna Sanctuary and the Annapurna Base Camp trek.
A trek along the Kali Gandaki River to Jomsom and Muktinath pilgrimage temple remains a popular soft trek. Those with a genuine interest in the history of Nepal are lured to destinations such as Mustang, a Tibetan cultural enclave in the far reaches of the Kali Gandaki river watershed.
While today trekkers can take several roads deep into the hills before setting out on foot, they all love to come back to Pokhara to rest on shores of Lake Phewa after the trek and marvel at the high peaks they just circumnavigated or base camps they visited.
