Should You Use Grass Carp For Aquatic Plant Control?

Governing the plant life within a pond, or any body of water is quite critical. Why you ask? Simple, since for whatever reason, you have decided that you do not want it there. No matter if those plants have generated some sort of hindrance for swimming children, or have just clogged up the motor on your favorite motorboat, you want them to be gone, and there are many methods of doing this.

Of course you can use chemical substances, plastic lining, freezing, manually pulling them up, or perhaps even dye, but those are fairly strenuous, and there’s no promise that your pond, or fish, would ever be the same again following these actions. Therefore it’s time to have a look at alternative methods—methods which won’t break your back OR the pond.

Around nineteen sixty-three, a brand new fish was introduced in to the U.S. ecology, and that fish was known as the Grass Carp. This fish was purposefully introduced into our ecosystem for the simple purpose of eradicating aquatic plants, and so far it’s lived up to it’s reputation. Here in the US, A Grass Carp is commonly called a White Amur, probably because of the fact that the word Carp has negative interpretations here in the United States., and the name “Amur” is a reference to the river that this fish comes from, a river which runs the border between China and Russia.

The Grass Carp, is what’s referred to as an aggressive species, meaning that it will reproduce and overtake the ecosystem which it is placed in (similar to humans), however science has progressed far, and while it required some time, as well as lots of gene manipulation, sterilizing the Grass Carp finally became standard procedure everywhere in the world so that the introduction does not harm or eradicate the ecosystem.

Another thing to note, is that the Grass Carp does not consume everything, naturally it enjoys plants, and will eat most of it, but as with human being, there are items which it enjoys more than others. A couple of the items that the Grass Carp does like, are:

Coontail
Spikerush
Smartweed
Bladderwort
Bulrush
Water hyssop
Eelgrass

There are several additional grasses, and a quick trip to a library, an Internet query, or a consultation with a professional would immediately reveal the things a grass carp would eat.

When purchased in bulk, Grass Carp is pretty cheap, ranging from about $10-20 for each fish, and that is perfectly reasonable considering the years of service it will give you; living for about ten to eleven years.

In some states, you’ll need to get a license before you place Grass Carp in any sort of water, even if it is owned by you. To discover if this is required, talk to the game warden in your area, or just check the regulations of the state, since that info is freely available to anyone that needs it.

Clearly, Grass Carp are a great alternative from utilizing chemicals, or lining your pond with a plastic cover, because not only are these perfect for getting rid of undesired plants, you should also remember that this is an interdependent relationship, you provide the thing they desire, and in return they give their services to you, keeping you from needing to do it yourself. All in all, that’s a good exchange.
