The ABCs of Floor Polishing

All over the planet, vast amounts of dollars and great numbers of man-hours are used up each year on floor polishing appliances and cleaning media to keep the floors of homes, hotels, offices, restaurants and institutions clean and shiny. It is quite lucky that a few inventive men and women have devised innovative tools and potent cleaning solvents to help in this task.

The floor polishing machine is one of those appliances. What this equipment does is to whirl very rapidly discs that incorporate bristles for cleaning, abrasive materials for sanding, or any soft material for polishing with wax or liquid solutions. They can be hand-operated for small applications, but they can also be large and hefty for construction use.

You can think of the manually-operated tool as an rectangular tool, about a foot long and 15 cm wide, with a fastener that can carry a disc at the bottom or, on some models, at its far end. There are several variations in its layout, but this is the broad idea. You do not want this type for your floor polishing requirements. It is too small for the purpose. Neither do you want the big industrial types.

What you want for your home is the medium-sized polisher that you can use to mop and buff your floors. The motor, along with the discs, sits on the floor. A movable pole is attached to the engine, (extends up|reaches up|continues} to about your waist, and ends in a t-handle. You use this handle to control the polisher. If you want it to move left, lower the handle; to the right, lift it. If you want to stop, just let go of it. A plastic container is attached to the pole which may carry and automatically squirts liquid polishing solution to the floor.

This is floor polishing made trouble-free. No more bending down to your hands and knees to scrub the floor. No more greasy hands applying wax. You just stand up, lower or lift the handle, and you get clean shiny floors.
